TECHNICAL SERVICES

THE studios centre is in Mercury House, the Far East headquarters of Cable and Wireless Ltd., who are responsible for the department's technical operations.

There are nine studios, including separate continuity and production suites for the Chinese and English Programme Services, three record- ing rooms and a central control room, from which programmes are fed by landline to the transmitters at Hung Hom.

100. Technical operations became considerably more complex during the year as a result of the increase in broadcasting hours and diversity of programme types.

101. The bulk of new equipment ordered for the improved services arrived and was put into service, the main drama studio control cubicle was rebuilt, and a narrator's studio was constructed adjacent to it. The recording suite was rebuilt to give three recording rooms and one smaller studio in place of the original single recording channel and studio.

102. Engineering staff contributed to the programme staff's training course described in paragraph 120, and advanced training in pro- gramme operations was given to selected control operators.

TRANSMITTERS

103. A high standard of operational efficiency was maintained during the year, the total duration of transmitter interruptions actually being less than in the preceding year, despite an increase in hours of operation of over 30%.
