65. Among the talks on various musical subjects was a series by Father T. J. Ryan, S.J., on the 'Music of England'. Mr. John Jenkins, the British Council Representative, spoke about his namesake, the 17th Century composer. In March a new fortnightly music magazine was started called ‘Talking About Music' produced by Irene Yuen.

66. The backbone of serious music were gramophone records and transcribed concerts from England. The Sunday Concert averaged seventy-five minutes each week; other programmes included the 'Com- poser of the Week', 'Music in Miniature' and 'Music from A-Z', a lighter approach to serious music broadcast on Saturday evenings.

LIGHT MUSIC

67. There has been an increase in the number of locally produced light music programmes. Several broadcasts were made by the Hong Kong Concert Orchestra and the beginning of December saw the start of 'Out and About'-relays of dance music from Night Clubs and restaurants in the Colony. By the end of March music had been heard from the Paramount Restaurant, The Golden Phoenix and Maxim's.

There were two series of 'Quiet Listening'-music played at the Hammond Organ by Hector Chauvin and one of 'Box 200' by Bert Gillett. 'A Paper of Pins' was the unusual title of a lively series of programmes in which Barbara Lawrence sang and talked about American Folk Songs. Both military and dance band sections of the Far East Band of the R.A.F. broadcast, and in June there was a programme by the United States Air Force Band.

68. In March a new light music series began entitled 'Starlight'. This could be described as an attempt to raise the standard of locally produced music, with the hope that studio band shows would become a regular feature. 'Starlight' featured a different night club singer each week.

Other programmes in this vein were broadcast, by the Jericho Jazz band and also by two visitors to the Colony, Jean Dominique and Jim Talmadge.

LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

69. It has not proved possible to produce a local variety show at a professional level. Thus all variety was provided through transcription services. During the year there were series of 'Take It From Here', ‘A Life of Bliss', 'The Goon Show', 'The Floggits' and 'Show Time at the
