Church and the Chinese Methodist Church. Services were always broadcast from the studio, which is a not altogether satisfactory method, and the reorganizations being planned should bring Chinese religious broadcasting more into line with its English counterpart, with regular services being broadcast on Sunday mornings from churches.
ENGLISH BY RADIO
49. Further progress was made in the broadcasting of B.B.C. English By Radio lessons and in the publication of lesson texts. The first booklet of fifty lessons in the 'English For You' series sold over eighteen thousand copies and although sales for the second and third booklet were somewhat lower, they demonstrated the very keen interest in learning English by means of radio lessons.
The Manager of the B.B.C. English By Radio Department, Mr. S. F. Stevens, visited the Colony in March to discuss the broadcasts and arrange for the sale of commercial English courses now being marketed by the B.B.C. The local audience to the radio lessons is one of the highest in the world and at the end of the year, plans were being considered to increase both the number and variety of the lessons.
PART III
ENGLISH PROGRAMME SERVICE
GENERAL
THE English Service broadcasts for nine and a half hours on weekdays, thirteen hours on Saturdays, and fifteen and a half hours on Sundays and Public Holidays. Transmissions on weekdays are divided into three periods, early morning, lunchtime and evenings, with breaks in the service in the morning and afternoon. Two hours were added to the service on Sunday mornings in September, but, apart from this English programme hours remained the same as in the previous year.
51. Although the service is predominantly English, there is a weekly programme in Portuguese and a fortnightly programme in French.
52. Nearly 90% of the listeners to the English service are Chinese, and no programme has an audience of less than 70% Chinese.
53. Within the limits of the time available, the English Service aims to give a balanced programme of the best in popular and classical music, plays, variety, talks, news-both world and local-and feature programmes. Much of the material is recorded, considerable use being
