The English programme was broadcast on a medium wave transmitter on 860 kc/s.
69. Within the scope of a ten hour broadcasting day, the provision of a balanced service, particularly to listeners from Europe or America accustomed to many alternative programme services, is a difficult task. Both minority and majority tastes must be catered for as far as possible. At the same time, if a radio station is to perform its proper function in society, it must reflect the character of the society, and the aim of the past year was to improve on the quality and quantity of pro- grammes of local origin, whilst at the same time maintaining contact with the main stream of western culture as provided in commercial and transcription recordings and in rebroadcasts from the B.B.C. programmes.

Details of local programmes will be found in the follow- ing pages; the range was considerable, a broadcast by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, a talk on the Buddha Jayanti, a feature on the Hong Kong Club, dance music from an American liner, a studio jazz club, the Asian Film Festival to take a few at random.

71. Her Majesty the Queen's Christmas broadcast was heard at 11 p.m. on Christmas Day, preceded by the traditional Christmas Day Commonwealth programme which this year included recordings made in Hong Kong.
The third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation on June 2nd was commemorated by the broadcasting of recordings of parts of the Coronation Service, and three weeks later listeners heard Richard Dimbleby describing a ceremony which, perhaps more than any of recent years, warmed the hearts of all who heard it. The occasion was the centenary of the creation of the Victoria Cross when Her Majesty reviewed the holders of the V.C. in a brilliant ceremony under a cloudless sky in Hyde Park, on the spot where Queen Victoria had held the first V.C. Review.
In October, came the State Opening of Parliament and a description of the Royal Drive from Buckingham Palace to Westminster; and in February the Royal visit to Portugal,
