and nutrition during August and September. Miss CHAN Chui Yuk presented two programmes per week for children with story telling, general knowledge and riddles, and once a month a children play was produced.

English by Radio.

45. Delays in the manufacture of the recordings led to an interruption in the B.B.C. 'English for You' series. In all there are a hundred and fifty lessons in the course, in three sections of fifty lessons each. At the end of the first series, the course was suspended for some months and restarted in February. The lessons, in Kuoyu and Cantonese, had been extremely popular and in certain respects the temporary interruption was a blessing in disguise as it was decided that even greater use could be obtained from the radio lessons if the texts could be published in booklet form which listeners could use in conjunc- tion with the broadcasts.

Accordingly, the B.B.C. contracted with a Hong Kong publisher for the translation and publication as a booklet of the first fifty lessons. The texts were sent to the publisher via Radio Hong Kong, where the necessary emendations were made for publishing purposes. After being set up by the publishers, the proofs were read by Radio Hong Kong staff and the booklet was issued for sale in February. Sales were very gratifying; publication day was set to coincide with the rebroadcasting of the first fifty lessons, and within the first two weeks over 10,000 copies of the booklet had been sold. The second booklet, cover- ing lessons 51 - 100, was being set up at the end of the year and will be published to coincide with the broadcasting of the second lesson series.

As in other parts of the world, these lessons have proved a most potent aid in teaching English and an understanding of Britain.
