Senior Programme Assistant (seconded from the B.B.C.) to fill the vacancy, approval was given for the appointment of a supernumerary Programme Assistant, keeping the effective programme planning and production strength at three.

43. The English programme is on the air for 72 hours per week, of which 8 hours, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, are designed for H.M. Forces serving in the Colony. Weekly pro- grammes are broadcast in Portuguese and French. Hours of broadcasting were as follows:

44. Once again, the prominent feature of the year's English programmes was the breaking of new ground in the field of outside broadcasts and records, culminating in the most com- plicated outside broadcast so far attempted, the dedication of the Saiwan War Memorial on February 20th.

Among the many programmes either broadcast direct, or compiled from recordings made in the field, were 'Primus in Indis', a feature on the Dorset Regiment Tattoo, the 'Tale of a Piano', "The Royal Observatory', the A.A. Rally and the Chinese New Year celebrations.

There was an overall improvement in programme production and presentation as the capabilities and limitations of equipment were discovered and although it could not be said that any startling advances were made in either the art or science of broadcasting, in many programmes a standard was reached not far below that of the world's major broadcasting organizations.
