CONTROL OF RABIES.

Committee appointed by Government.

TERMS OF REFERENCE.

A Committee has been appointed to consider control measures to be adopted against rabies.

The composition of the Committee is as follows:-

Chairman, Dr. K. C. Yeo (Deputy Director of Health Services); Members-Dr. E. F. Duck (Government Pathologist),

Mr. A. R. S. Major (Police Department),

Mr. J. T. Wakefield (Asst. District Officer, South),

Mr. R. H. Robertson, O.B.E., (Senior Veterinary Officer),

Mr. Horace Lo,

Mr. E. C. Frederick (President of the Kennel Club),

Mr. F. H. Loseby (Hon. Secretary, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty

to Animals);

Secretary, Mr. T. S. D. Whitley.

The terms of reference of the Committee are as follows:

To consider and make recommendations on (1) the compulsory inoculation (Anti-rabic) of dogs as a condition of licensing; (2) whether the compulsory inoculation requirements should be applied also to cats and other susceptible animals; (3) the staff, equipment and supplies necessary to implement the recommendations of the Com- mittee; (4) other control measures to be adopted against rabies.

Members of the public are cordially invited to forward in writing to the Secretary, c/o Urban Council, any facts or expressions of opinion on this question that they may wish the Committee to discuss.

Committee on Rabies.

With reference to the set-up of the Committee by Government to combat rabies, may I venture to make the following suggestions as a fellow citizen:

1. Yes-This was done in Japan before the war and things seem to be most satisfactory.

2. This is not possible, compulsory inoculation of cats means increase in the rat population.

3. Necessary.

4. Prohibit the sale of dog meat, this will discourage vendors to import dogs and puppies from the interior where rabies are prevalent. Police to intensify their vigilance on incoming steamers as regards importation of dogs without a permit from the Colonial Vet.
