In these matters I accordingly agree with the Interim Mining Policy Com- mittee, that an Inspector of Mines and appropriate subordinate staff should be appoint- ed at the earliest possible date and attached to the Public Works or other suitable Department.

Applications to mine various minerals (e.g. wolfram, galena, ochre, China- clay) have long been outstanding. Applicants have recently been informed that their requests cannot at present be granted, but that it may be possible to re-open the question in about April, 1949. It is important that legitimate mining should be actively encouraged, and that early steps be taken to enable this development to proceed.
