Valley. The filters for the former source, being at a lower level, naturally give lower Those for the latter pressure and therefore supply the areas nearest to the source. source, giving higher pressure, are utilized to distribute water further afield.

Distribution Systems-Kowloon.

110. The distribution mains are generally in better condition than those in the City having been laid more recently.

111. Due to shortage of Service Reservoir capacity, to absence of mains in some areas and to some of the existing mains being too small, distribution to all consumers is extremely difficult

112. No organisation exists for the systematic detection of waste and for the cleansing of mains.

113. New and larger mains are urgently required and in view of the probable large growth in Kowloon in the near future the extension of the distribution system should receive careful study in conjunction with the town planning schemes.

114. It is proposed to prepare a programme for dealing with these matters in due course.

VILLAGE SUPPLIES

Aberdeen Village Waterworks.

115. These works supply the villages of Aberdeen and Aplichau and were constructed in 1896. They consist of a pipe line from the Aberdeen Storage Re- servoirs, a small slow sand filtration plant with a service reservoir adjacent and a distribution system. Although originally provided to supply Aberdeen Village only, an extension to Aplichan was made in 1928 by means of a small pipe across the

harbour.

116. The growth in this locality has been such that the water supply is now totally inadequate to meet requirements and new service connections are having to be refused for this reason. Moreover with the recent closing of the existing wells in Aplichau and the absence of an alternative supply great hardship is being imposed in some of the industries in that district.

Condition of the Works.

117. The present filters and service reservoir are at too low a level to provide a good supply to consumers. They are also too small in capacity for present needs. Parts of the distribution system are in good condition but the harbour main is worn out and is too small to carry a sufficient supply for Aplichau.

Proposed New Works.

118. It is therefore proposed that the existing filters, service reservoir and cross harbour pipeline he abandoned and replaced by new works. This would involve a new filtration plant and service reservoir at a higher level, a new length of supply main, a new cross Harbour pipe, extensions to the distribution system and a new balance tank on Aplichau. The materials for the proposed new harbour pipe and balance tank have been already provided but no funds have been hitherto available for their laying and erection.

WORKSHOPS

Island.

119. Owing to the recent growth of the Colony generally and of the Water- works in particular the Island Workshop is now of inadequate capacity and has insufficient equipment for carrying out the numerous repairs it is called upon to
