Applicants for admission must have attained a good standard of proficiency in Mathematics, Drawing and Handwork. They must be of good character and sound physique.
Students of less than fourteen or more than nineteen years of age will not be eligible for admission. Students admitted to the Trade School will be on probation for their first three months, at the end of which the question of their retention or dismissal will be decided.
Selection will be on the recommendation of the Principal and final decision rests with the Inspector of Schools, Penang.
FEES.
A tuition fee of $3.00 per month will be charged. A limited number of free places will be provided. All students must provide themselves with overalls (2 sets) subscribe to the Sports Fund and make good any damage to Government tools, machines or other property caused by wilful neglect, carelessness or disobedience.
They must also replace or pay for any tools, apparatus or Government property issued to them on loan and lost whilst in their charge.
Approved text books, of which there will be but few, must be purchased by the students themselves.
Tools or other articles made by a student with the sanction of the Principal may be retained by him on leaving the school.
Any article not the property of Government on which unauthorised work is being done in the school premises is liable to confiscation and the question of its return rests entirely with the Principal.
An undertaking to complete the three years' course, unless found unsuitable by the Principal must be given by each student on entry.
SYLLABUS OF WORK.
First Year Students.
Benchwork and use of fitter's tools, drawing, mensuration, geometry and the reading of simple engineer's drawings. Lectures and instruction on internal combus- tion engines and their application. Properties and uses of metal, etc. Storekeeping and general workshop routine.
Second Year Students.
Turning and machining. Advanced benchwork and fitting, Blacksmith and Tin- smith work. Stores accounts and record work. Practical electricity and wiring. Theory of Foundry work and Pattern making.
Third Year Students,
Generally speaking students are given the work which would ordinarily be dealt with by a large modern commercial repair garage. Where considered advisable they may be allowed to specialise for other trades for which they have been found suited-- Blacksmith, Tinner, Electrician, etc. As far as possible the third year course is so arranged as to suit each student's inclination or ability.
The benchwork will consist of exercises in chipping, filing, and scraping includ- ing the use and care of hand tools, cutting key ways and fitting keys, tapping and screwing, fitting of taper pins, sheet metal work, the use and manufacture of calipers, gauges, etc. marking off, brazing, remetalling, and fitting of bearings, etc., etc. all these operations the importance of absolute accuracy will be insisted upon.
In
