The suggestion to have a question on the Census Form relating to length of residence in the Colony was made in the 1921 Report in a paragraph entitled "Migratory nature of the Population. The first sentence in that paragraph, which is almost as true today as it was in 1921, was The population still remains to a large extent migratory, a large proportion of it going backwards and forwards between the Colony and China. With the increase in family life this coming and going may be reduced somewhat, but the returns from this Census show that it still continues to a very great extent.
Tables 29 and 30 give the periods of residence claimed by persons of Chinese race in the three main divisions of the Colony, and by persons of the non-Chinese races in individual years up to 10 and thereafter in 5 yearly groups.
Table 31 also shows the percentages of the population who claim residence for various 5 yearly periods.
