Paving of Main Roads in Hongkong.—(C.S.O. 403/1914.)

The Chairman explained that the question of paving the main roads in the City with some more durable materials than those hitherto in use had been receiving the attention of Government and the following estimates of the cost of adopting such paving on the roads mentioned be..ow had been prepared :--

Connaught Road from Pedder Street to Hill Road,-granite setts for a width of 30 feet next the Praya wall and the remainder surfaced with Compressed Asphalte, the whole laid on a cement concrete foundation,

$394,500

(ii.) Des Voeux Road from Pedder Street to Hill Road, Compressed Asphalte on cement concrete foundation throughout, (iii.) Praya West from Hill Road to Sands Street,-similar to (i),....... (iv.) Catchick Street, from Sands Street to Cadogan Street,--similar

280,000

69,100

to (ii),...

19,800

Total,.....

$763,400

He further explained that such paving works would be spread over a number of years, a certain sum being provided annually in the Estimates for the purpose. If the proposals were adopted, it was anticipated that the saving to be effected under the Maintenance Vote would suffice to enable improved paving to be gradually laid on the other main roads in the City.
