Establishment of a Convict Prison on Stonecutters' Island. (C.S.O. 138 (C.O.D.))

The Chairman laid before the Committee plans which had been prepared for the establishment of a Convict Prison on Stonecutters' Island and explained that the scheme was capable of being expanded so as to provide ultimately for the removal of the entire Gaol to that place so far as such reinoval was deemed practicable. He also read the report of a Committee appointed in 1901 to consider the ques- tion (C.S.O. 18) and certain recent correspondence between the Colonial Office and War Department on the subject (C.S.O. 4383).

After some discussion, the Honourable Colonial Treasurer moved :—

That the Government be requested to have the report of a Committee which in 1891 consi- dered the question of transferring the Gaol to Stonecutters' Island, together with any subsequent papers bearing upon the question, printed and furnished to this Committee.
