An Hydraulic Motor of the Worthington type has been fixed in Garden Road at a cost of $3,156.09, and commenced pumping water to the houses situated along the Peak Road early in September; and is now pumping night and day supplying filtered water to the higher levels of the City.

Fountain. Forty-nine fountains at a cost of $890.23 have been fixed in various parts of the City for the purpose of rendering a supply of water easily. available for those who have not got water laid on inside their premises.

House Services.The work of laying on water to private premises was com- menced early in September and since then the service pipes of 599 houses have been connected with the new water mains, and in several instances the work throughout including the internal fittings has been executed by this Department at the cost of the applicant.

Meters.In cases where water is required for other than domestic purposes meters have been fixed. Up to the 31st of December 24 meters ranging in size. from inch to 3 inches had been fixed at a cost of $1,609.83.

SEWERAGE WORKS.

In accordance with instructions received in C.S.O. 1846, the works for the sewerage of the City of Victoria have been commenced and considerable progress has been made with the new system of sewers in the High Level District, upwards of 2,700 lineal yards having been completed, and with the works of training the Nullahs in the Western District between the Pokfulam Conduit and the Robinson Road. The latter are nearly completed; the cost of these works to date has been $12,640.52.

Five hundred lineal yards of pipe sewers in the district marked 2E on plan attached have been completed at a cost of $1,563.40. This work was rendered immediately necessary owing to the exceptionally bad condition of the old drains.

Peak Sewerage.—The sewers in the Peak District have been extended along the Plantation and the Peak Roads for a length of 800 lineal yards to provide for the drainage of new houses; the cost of this work has been $2,979 87, making the total cost of the Peak Sewerage Works to date $8,581.95.

Kowloon Sewerage.-A short length of sewer and a flushing tank have been constructed in Kimberley Road at a cost of $464.03 providing for the drainage of the new terrace now nearly completed in this locality. The total cost of the Kowloon Sewerage Works to date is $6,184.50.

Hunghom Sewerage.-Owing to the condition of the existing drains in Hung- hom and the serious expense that would be involved in cleaning and repairing them even as a temporary measure, the construction of the new system of sewers was commenced early in September; 1,160 lineal yards have now been completed.

The cost of this work to date has been $2,424.23.

The more important other works of Sewerage and Drainage undertaken by this Department during the past year have been-

(1.) The re-arrangement of the sewers and internal sanitary fittings of

the Government Civil Hospital.

(2.) The diversion of the storm-water drain crossing the site of the New

Central Market.

(3.) The construction of a sewer in Rutler Street. The total cost of these works has been $7.644.06.
