8. In the present state of the Finances of the Colony it could not, unassisted, undertake to incur the expenditure of even £45,000, the original Estimate. If the whole expense £71,000 is to be borne by the Colonial Government, the work will have to be postponed for ten years at least, if not longer.
9. The present General Officer in Command of the Troops, Major-General CAMERON, C.B., has warmly supported the scheme for the extension of the Praya, and has recommended that a portion of the cost should be borne by the War Office. The Admiralty have, however, not yet given their adherence to a scheme which will deprive the Naval Yard of its water frontage. The last communication from the Admiralty on the subject states that the Lords Commissioners have under their consideration the question of the extension of the Naval Yard, and that until this has been settled, any decision on the various points connected with the proposed extension of the Praya must necessarily be postponed.
