Correspondence respecting the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Albany.

Presented to the Legislative Council, by command of His Excellency the Governor.

(1.)

Governor Sir George F. Bowen G.C.M.G. to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Mr LORD,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG, 5th April, 1884.

I have the honour to report that the intelligence by telegraph of the death of His Royal Highness Prince LEOPOLD, Duke of Albany, caused universal sorrow in this community.

2. I transmit herewith, to be laid before Her Majesty, copies of the Address of Condolence to the QUEEN unanimously adopted by the Legislative Council of Hongkong.

3. As I write, the Batteries on shore, and the English, French, German, Italian, Russian, and American men-of-war at anchor here are firing each thirty (30) minute guns, in observance of the Funeral of the Duke of Albany, which is being celebrated at Windsor on this day. It is a grand spectacle in the magnificent harbour of Hongkong, which recalls the beauties of Corfu and of Spezzia. The mountains of the neighbouring mainland of China are re-echoing the roar of the European and American cannon;-a grand requiem for the lamented Prince in this extreme outpost of the British Empire in the Far East.

The Right Honourable

The EARL OF DERBY K.G..

We, Your Majesty's dutiful and loyal subjects, the Governor and Legislative Council of Hongkong, in Council assembled, desire to offer the expression of our sincere sympathy with the affliction which Your Majesty has suffered through the death of His Royal Highness, Prince LEOPOLD. Duke of Albany.
