social studies at the University of Hong Kong and 56 for the Degree course at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Students completing courses at the universities during 1970 totalled 57. At Hong Kong University 8 completed the Diploma course and 21 the Degree course. At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 28 completed training and received their Bachelor in Social Sciences (Social Work) Degree.
9. Fieldwork training is an important part of formal social work training. In this respect, the Department continued to provide fieldwork training and professional supervision for 23 social work students from the universities for periods ranging from three months to one year. In the summer of 1970, the Department co-ordinated a work programme to enable a total of 75 students to work in various offices, community centres, child care and correctional institutions under the summer student employment scheme.
10. Government continued to provide bursaries for social work students at both universities. Bursaries amounting to $170,060 were awarded to 80 students. In order to encourage outstanding students to take up social work as their career the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation offers up to $25,000 annually to each university for use as scholarships for social work students.
IN-SERVICE TRAINING
11. Since 1962, the Department has been organizing in-service and refresher social welfare training courses for the staff employed in voluntary agencies as well as Government Departments. This includes staff engaged in day and residential work with children, family welfare services, probation and aftercare services for young people, and rehabilitation of the disabled. The basic courses generally last five months (on a week per month basis). Refresher courses are comparatively shorter. Two new full time courses on youth work lasting for 12 and 13 months respectively were organized under the guidance and assistance of Dr. Irving A. SPERGEL, UN Adviser on Youth Work. Administrators and supervisors from voluntary agencies continued to give their support in the joint planning and evaluation of the programmes and in providing speakers on special subjects.

12. A second full time course in nursery work was conducted during the year. This course lasts for 10 months and is offered to young
