in social study since September 1967 and developed a three year social work degree programme. 19 students completed the diploma course and 7 completed the certificate course in 1967; 9 enrolled in the current year for the post-graduate diploma.

118. At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, training in social work as a major course is given at the Chung Chi College Department of Sociology and Social Work and the United College Department of Social Work. 31 students graduated in social work in 1967. (19 from Chung Chi and 12 from United College) 30 enrolled in the current year for the Bachelor Degree in Social Science (17 in Chung Chi and 13 in United College).

119. The Diploma awarded by the University of Hong Kong and the Degree in Social Science awarded by the Chinese University of Hong Kong qualify a person for appointment in the Department as an Assist- ant Social Welfare Officer.

120. The extra-mural departments of the two Universities continued to offer various courses. During the year four officers from the depart- ment attended a course given in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Psychology of the subnormal, juvenile delinquency and education for parents; at the end of the year seven officers were still attending the Social Welfare Certificate course in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

121. Generally speaking, the Training Section of the Social Welfare Department continued its work of giving basic in-service courses for nursery workers, social welfare workers of both voluntary agencies and government departments and refresher courses to those who had attended basic courses in previous years. In addition, and apart from providing actual courses of various kinds, Training Officers have been able to offer help and advice to individual welfare agencies on their own staff training programmes and problems. Increasingly they have become involved in committees of one kind or another related to matters on staff training.

122. During the year, the Training Section was able to expand its scope of work in various directions. Four basic courses were given to 72 nursery workers, while 53 social welfare workers attended three introductory courses in social work. These courses were given on two levels, for welfare workers with secondary school education and for university graduates without professional training. A total of 69 nursery
