degree who intend to proceed to the Diploma course; the total value of bursaries awarded during the year was $70,520, held by eleven Certificate students and fourteen Arts degree students. During the year four new bursary awards were made to Certificate students and six to under- graduates studying for a degree followed by the Diploma. An encour- aging sign that the community is increasingly aware of social work as a rewarding career

career was the greater number and higher quality of candidates for the two courses. The time has come when scholarships are needed, as well as more bursaries, so as to attract students of the highest calibre.

24. Social work training is also provided at Chung Chi College in its department of Sociology and Social Work. 67 students secured Diplomas with Social Work majors between 1956 and 1962 and 96 are now enrolled in the four-year course in Social Work and Sociology; the graduating class in Social Work this year will number 12 students. Three other post-secondary colleges also offer regular courses in Sociology with varying degrees of Social Work content. Background courses are offered by the Extra-Mural Department of the University of Hong Kong and during the year fifty two officers of the Department took courses in such subjects as Human Relations, Social Psychology, Library Technique and Development, Special Education and Special Welfare Services.

25. Five members of the Department completed courses overseas during the year. Four of these were at Universities, in Applied Social Studies at London, in Criminology at Cambridge, in Administration of Children's Institutions at Birmingham and in Community Development at the University of British Columbia; the fifth course was one for teachers of the mentally handicapped in Bristol. The Assistant Director (Professional) and the Principal Officer (Special Welfare Services) attended the Eleventh International Conference of Social Work and the International Congress of Schools of Social Work in Brazil. A senior officer of the Special Welfare Services Section participated in the Pan- Pacific Seminar on Vocational Rehabilitation and in the second Pan- Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation in Manila in November and December. The Principal Training Officer took part in the Asian Seminar on Training for Family and Child Welfare organized by ECAFE in Bangkok in December.

26. At the end of March 7 officers were engaged in higher studies abroad, 2 for the degree of Master of Social Work at the University of Toronto, 1 taking a one-year course at the same University, 1 attending
