1957 by members of these three clubs has shown that success must be earned the hard way. They are now receiving more support, and are winning the appreciation of the general public.

147. Welfare Projects. Contributions towards the Kowloon City Kaifong School building fund now aggregate over $170,000. Construction work had already started in March 1957, and it is expected that the school will be completed by the Autumn.

148. Maternity Homes for both Hunghom and Aplichau districts are now being planned by these two kaifong associa- tions respectively. The cost of the former is estimated at approximately $100,000, the latter at under $50,000.

149. Another kaifong school project, capable of accom- modating 1,500 students, is being undertaken by the Tai Hang Kaifong Association, at an estimated cost of over $150,000. Construction began in February 1957 and the school is expected to be completed in some six months.

150. The Shamshuipo Kaifong Association has in the past year been planning the erection of a Welfare Centre at Maple Street, in which the kaifong school, library, clinic, office, and rooms for other charitable organizations are to be included.

151. The Kowloon Women's Welfare Club has applied to the Education Department for a site at King's Park for the erection of a school estimated at some $300,000. The matter is under consideration.

152. A Day Nursery to help cope with the urgent demand of poor working mothers is now being planned by the Hong Kong Women's Welfare Club (Western). The building will be of four storeys and will cost around $100,000. The club has already raised over $80,000, and its application for a site is at present under favourable consideration.

VOLUNTARY CO-ORDINATION

153. The officially appointed Social Welfare Advisory Com- mittee advises Government on matters connected with social welfare. The Committee was organized in its present form some five years ago, and the Social Welfare Officer is the Chair- man as well as being the only official member. All the other
