number of students who enter for the Social Science Certificat or Diploma is very small, and it would appear that the prospect of a career as a social worker does not attract the average student, possibly because the work, besides being exacting both physically and emotionally, is not so well paid as in many other professions.

23. The Social Welfare Office, the Medical Department (Almoners' Branch) and certain voluntary organizations such as the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society offered facilities for the practical training of students taking the University course in social science, and also gave help in supervising them during their training.

24. As in previous years, the 20-month Club Leadership Training Course continued to provide specialized training for prospective youth leaders, and was run by the Youth Welfare Section of the Social Welfare Office in co-operation with Grantham Training College. This course was launched in 1951 by the Standing Conference of Youth Organizations. Repre- sentatives of member-organizations of the Conference continued to give generously of their time to lecturing, and to place what- ever facilities they have for practical training at the students' disposal. As part of the students' practical training, they were required to take up residence in a hostel set up in the Tsan Yuk Welfare Centre, to help run a Junior Mixed Club, and generally to get to know and understand the community in the very congested Western district through home visits, regular parents' evenings, etc. A total of 23 young men and women have completed this Course since its establishment.

In general, training and instruction in Social Work during the year continued to be carried out on the job by Government and voluntary bodies, each being responsible for training their own staff.

CHAPTER IV — INFANT WELFARE

26. As in previous years, the Society for the Protection of Children is still the best-known voluntary agency to concern itself primarily with the welfare of infants. This Society devotes nearly all of its funds, staff, and time to maternity and infant welfare work, and supplements very effectively the
