Recreation, Sport, Culture and the Arts

Learning Programme, launched in 2014, aims to give young people a better understanding of previous generations' lives.

In January 2014, HKYHA's annual 'Ngong Ping Charity Walk' at North Lantau Island Country Park attracted over 1,000 participants and raised much needed funds for hostel enhancement, environmental protection, and HKYHA's conservation projects.

In August, HKYHA nominated two tertiary education students from its youth leadership programme to participate in the World Youth Rally 2014 in Seoul, experiencing Korean culture and meeting young people from around the world.

Sporting Achievements

In 2014, the Hong Kong team won 42 medals (six gold, 12 silver and 24 bronze) at the 17th Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, Korea. Track cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze won gold medals in the Women's Sprint and Keirin events, and rower Lok Kwan-hoi and gymnast Shek Wai-hung won gold medals in Lightweight Men's Single Sculls and Men's Vault respectively.

Hong Kong disabled athletes also performed well at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, Korea, winning 44 medals (10 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze). The wheelchair fencing team won four gold medals in Women's Foil Individual Cat B, Men's Sabre Individual Cat B, Men's Sabre Team and Women's Foil Team; while the table tennis athletes won gold, silver and bronze medals in the Women's Single TT11 event.

Youth athletes won seven medals (two gold, four silver and one bronze) at the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games. Ng Tsz-yau won gold in the Badminton Mixed Doubles event, while fencers Albert Chien Kei-hsu and Ryan Choi Chun-yin won gold in the Mixed Continental Team.

The Men's Snooker Team of Fung Kwok-wai and Lee Chun-wai won the IBSF World 6-Red & Team Snooker Championships 2014 in June, becoming the first Hong Kong men's snooker team to become World Champions.

Recreation and Sports Programmes

In 2014, the LCSD organised some 38,300 recreation and sports programmes for about 2.14 million participants of all ages and abilities at a total cost of $143 million.

District Sports Teams Training Scheme

A total of 12,218 young people took part in 324 district team events for basketball, football, handball and fencing in 2014.

Young Athletes Training Scheme

In 2014, 31,469 teenagers joined training in 30 sports disciplines under the 'Young Athletes Training Scheme
