After years of deliberations and meticulous preparation, the Mandatory Provident Fund System comes into full operation, assisting members of the workforce to accumulate financial resources for their retirement protection.

A Vice Premier, Mr Wu Bangguo, arrives for a four-day visit and to officiate at the opening ceremony of the International Telecommunication Union Telecom Asia 2000 Exhibition and Forum. In the evening, Mr Wu attends a banquet hosted by the Chief Executive in his honour at Government House.
