The Buddhist community paid homage to a sacred relic which was permitted to leave Beijing for only the third time. The holy tooth recovered from the ashes of Buddha Sakyamuni after his cremation more than 2 500 years ago was encased in a miniature golden pagoda. It was on display at the Hong Kong Coliseum in May, during which time Buddha's Birthday, on May 22, was celebrated as a public holiday for the first time.
