River Trade

The Recommended Outline Development Plan includes river trade terminals to act as an import and export corridor for Pearl River trade through the container port.

These dedicated wharves will provide a sheltered basin with 2 000 metres of quays by the year 2011. The quay length is based on forecast Pearl River transhipment cargo and handling rates from a varied mix of containerised and break bulk cargoes.

Phase I construction of the river trade terminals will include 400 metres of

quay with an alongside depth of eight metres to take various river vessels and barges. This will be backed by a cargo-handling and parking apron some 80 metres wide and a seven-hectare container storage and stacking area.

The maximum possible width of the backup area will be restricted to 125 metres because of the presence of the North Shore Road Link and other physical limitations. To make up for this, additional backup land will be provided near the berths.

Phases II and III will be on the inside face of the dockyard support facilities to create a sheltered basin. Phase IV will extend the Phase I quay to the east to complete the basin. The basin entrance will be to the west of the floating docks to separate river trade from floating dock operations.

Floating Docks

The seven floating docks operating off North Lantau may have to be repositioned to make way for construction of onshore support facilities for the new port.

Phase I of the Recommended Outline Development Plan provides for three floating docks, six typhoon moorings, 1 150 metres of quay and 15 hectares of backup land. Phase II provides for another floating dock, two typhoon shelters, 385 metres of quay and five hectares of backup land.

Marine Services Support Area

A marine services support area, centrally-located for both Victoria Harbour and the new port, will provide a harbour for tugs, pilot boats, launches and floating cranes as well as shore support facilities for servicing and maintenance.

Phase I will have 400 metres of quay and two hectares of backup land, with a further 400 metres of quay and two hectares of backup land in Phase II. The size is based on the approximately 15 to 18 tugs required for Lantau port operations and the need for a centralised tug facility for Victoria Harbour.
