RECREATION, SPORTS AND THE ARTS
In March, the School of Drama mounted one of the academy's major productions of the year-
the Broadway musical West Side Story. The school also presented three Directing and Design Majors productions including Max Fisch's The Chinese Wall in January, Marc Camoletti's Happy Birthday in March and William Gibson's The Miracle Worker in May. An adaptation of four of the Wakefield mystery plays, Looking For Rainbow, was also staged in May. The production was then taken to San Francisco and Los Angeles as part of a summer study tour. Special Guest Director Travis Preston was invited from the United States to direct Jean Genet's The Balcony in November. The school received many honours at the 2nd Hong Kong Drama Awards. A total of 12 prizes out of 27 were awarded to academy staff and graduates.
During the year, the academy gave a highly successful series of concerts at Government House at the invitation of the Governor, who regularly joined the packed audiences of over 300, drawn from all over the territory. In March and April, the School of Music presented a highly-acclaimed performance of Handel's opera Semele. The next operatic venture comprised scenes from Mozart's The Magic Flute and Massenet's Werther, marking the opening of the two-week long Summer Music Festival of concerts and recitals given by students of the academy. Monday lunch-time concerts and Friday piano departmental concerts continued as established features of academy musical life, while another series of Young Professional Musicians Platform concerts offered varied programmes of Chinese and European music. The opera performance at the end of the year was one of Mozart's - happiest and most tuneful works Marriage of Figaro. Academy composition students also distinguished themselves, receiving all five awards in the Hong Kong Composers' Guild New Generation '93 Competition.
The School of Technical Arts (Theatre) was involved in all the dance, drama and opera productions, with design and management students contributing significantly to the success of many events. A Technical Arts Graduation Exhibition '93 was organised by students before their graduation in June. The Sunset Pop Concert, produced by sound and lighting students, was held in the Drama Theatre in June before a full house. The school also participated in a study tour of Italy and Greece during the summer.
The Division of Technical Arts (TV/Film) expanded its activities significantly. Students and staff participated in several significant interactions with the academy's other schools through exercises involving videotaping various academy productions.
Business for Art
Business for Art is a non-profit organisation established in 1990 by a group of prominent business people in Hong Kong to encourage, assist and promote local arts in all forms to enrich the cultural life in the territory. It supports projects and programmes that draw public attention to cultural activities and bring the visual, creative and performing arts not only to those with cultivated tastes but also to those who might otherwise not be exposed to the arts. Business for Art also helps young artists to establish themselves and promotes opportunities for displaying their work.
The organisation published the Arts Patron quarterly bilingual magazine to promote business sponsorship and arts projects. Arts Patron was distributed to business, arts and media organisations and individuals in Hong Kong as well as overseas.
