RECREATION, SPORTS AND THE ARTS
exchange programmes, community sports programmes, and the organisation, in conjunction with the University of Canberra and Hong Kong Sports Institute, of degree courses in sports administration and coaching in Hong Kong.
The concept of identifying target sports and providing them with increased resources for development has been well received. Four such sports were identified initially: badminton, squash, swimming and windsurfing. Three more sports were added to this category in March 1992: football, rowing and table tennis. Others will be considered on a performance related basis.
Progress has been made in the coach education field since the inception in 1991 of the coach development programme, the major component of which is the Hong Kong Coach Accreditation Programme. The support given to this initiative by sports associations bodes well for future development. In 1991-2, an amount of $2 million was allocated to the programmes.
The Sports Aid Foundation Fund and the Sports Aid for the Disabled Fund, admin- istered by the board, increased substantially its level of support to leading athletes and 47 who satisfied the criteria were grant-aided. The total allocation granted in 1992 was $2.38 million.
Board staff have been active in securing additional funds from the commercial sector in support of sports associations development programmes. The Sports Sponsorship Advisory Services, which was introduced during the year, generated more than $12 million of sponsorship funding for Hong Kong sport in 1992, with a number of agreements running for several years.
