Hong Kong has 56 public housing estates which provide homes for 1.8 million peo ple of 43 per cent of the population. The showpiece is the Oi Man estate which was completed in 1975 and was visited by the Queen. Oi Man-which means Love the People-cost $186 million to build and its 12 multi-storey blocks, gardens and com- munity facilities cover 21 acres in Kowloon, Some 43,000 people live on the estate. They do their shopping either in the air conditioned commercial complex which includes a supermarket and a department store--or at traditional market stalls and small shops.
