More than one million tourists came to Hong Kong in 1973. Some came for the shopping, some for sightseeing, some for the food and some for the nightlife. But they all came to spend-making tourism Hong Kong's second largest foreign currency earner. In 1973 Hong Kong's gross earnings from tourism rose by 10 per cent on the previous year, to a total of $2,500 million. The tourists, mostly Japanese and American, occupied the many and varied hotels in the territory.
