of 3 years. It is designed to give a steady flow of finished units for letting at the rate of about 400 a month, with breathing spaces at intervals to compensate for any delays which may arise.
General Contract
108. The general contract for the construction of Phase I (1,546 flats) in two 20-storey buildings was awarded to Messrs. Wan Hin & Co. in the sum of $6,782,826.66, and work commenced on 1st March, 1961.
109. A contract for the 26 lifts to be installed in the eight 20-storey blocks was awarded to the Jardine Engineering Corporation for the Schindler lifts at a cost of $1,238,200. Sixteen of these will have speeds of 200 ft. per minute to serve the 12th floor and upwards. The remaining ten will have speeds of 100 ft. per minute and will serve the 5th-11th floors on a 'skip floor' basis.
Ancillary Works
110. The P.W.D. is in the process of carrying out storm water drainage schemes to conduct the rain from the surrounding hills through the Estate. This involves the construction of a 950 ft. long box culvert with almost 2,000 ft. of storm water drainage from the foothills to the existing nullah in Clearwater Bay Road. The culvert will be 11 ft. wide and 6 ft. high and the diameter of the storm water drain ranges from 24" to 78".
111. Both Clearwater Bay Road and Hammer Hill Road have to be diverted to allow the general building work to proceed, and they will be replaced by a main ring road round the site.
112. P.W.D. has invited tenders for the construction of these main roads around the Estate and agreement has been reached with them for the specification of the internal roads. As far as possible these are being incorporated in the site formation contract with a view to improving communications throughout the site whilst construction work and letting are proceeding.
113. A site for a temporary transformer position and one for a permanent transformer house have been agreed with the China Light & Power Co.

114. A site of about 36,000 sq. ft. has been allocated by Government to the Roman Catholic Church for the construction of a 24-classroom subsidized Anglo/Chinese secondary school for boys. Liaison with the
