Bay Road, north of Kai Tak airport. The site, a photograph of which appears at Fig. 10, should not require extensive site formation, and is adjacent to a main road, with a bus terminus nearby, which will reduce transportation problems.
89. The Public Works Department proceeded with the preparation of resumption schedules and conditions of grant. A topographical survey has been carried out by the Authority.
90. Clearance problems (there are about 1,550 people living on the site, including areas for new road alignments) are being examined by the Resettlement Department, in readiness for letting a site formation contract. Engineering works, particularly those for drainage, will be extensive and take some time to complete, but a piped mains water supply is available. Sea-water will have to be used for flushing.
91. Messrs. Palmer & Turner, the architects originally appointed to prepare a master plan for development of the site, provided several alternative lay-out schemes for consideration by the Authority and have now been invited to carry out the architectural work.
92. After an investigation into estimated capital costs and rentals, a brief was issued to Messrs. Palmer & Turner, calling for the prepara- tion of plans for blocks of flats with a density of 1,500 - 2,000 to the acre to house about 30,000 people within the lower rental range. The capital cost of the scheme will probably be over $50,000,000.
SITE AT MA TAU CHUNG, KOWLOON
93. The Authority's next scheme will probably be on a 10-acre site at Ma Tau Chung east of the Kowloon City Police Station. The site, recently relinquished by the Army and at present occupied by a disused hutted camp, has been reserved by Government for the Authority.
94. Little progress has so far been made, but the Public Works Department has been asked to define the boundaries, and a topo- graphical survey has been carried out by the Authority. Interested Government departments have been consulted about public buildings and other amenities in the estate, the engineering requirements are being investigated, and draft conditions of grant prepared.
95. It is understood there are no objections, now the new runway is in use, to building up to 150 ft. O.D. The possibility of using pre- stressed pre-fabricated concrete beams and floor slabs on this project is being examined in an effort to reduce costs.
