Steel windows and hollow-core doors will be fitted, and there are lifts, operating on the 'skip floor' system, in each block.
FLATS
There are 636 flats incorporated in these five blocks, designed to accommodate a total population of about 4,000. Owing to the steepness of the site, the lower part of Block E, adjoining Cadogan Street, will be formed by a retaining wall at its rear. The lower two storeys of this block will, therefore, be unsuitable for flats, and this space will be utilized as godowns (or warehouses) about 6,000 sq. ft. in aggregate area, available for rental.
The flats are generally of a simpler type than at North Point, but are likewise self-contained, and are of varying sizes designed for occupancy by between five and ten persons. Each flat comprises a living-bedroom, a kitchen 6′ × 7′ 6′′, and a bathroom containing a flush closet and a tap for washing. Each flat will also have a verandah about 13′ 6′′ wide x 5′ 3′′ deep, where there will be provision for drying clothes. The form of plan adopted is the gallery approach type, with blocks one flat deep only. This allows for maximum cross-ventilation, and also provides a very simple and direct method of construction that can be erected at minimum cost.
Each kitchen will be fitted with concrete benches and a glazed earthenware sink, with a mains water tap installed over each. Hard- wood shelving will also be provided, together with a food store having a wire gauze door. The wall between the kitchen and the living-room will contain glass louvres, vertically hung, which can be shut when required, or opened to give additional through ventilation. No flues have been allowed for in the kitchens, as it is intended that all cooking should be done either by kerosene or electricity. There will be refuse chutes at various central points in the different blocks, with hopper- heads on each floor at the half-landings, and collection chambers at ground level. As far as possible these chambers have been placed near roads to facilitate collection of refuse by lorry.
Water points in each flat are provided from the mains supply to the kitchen sink and the W.C. compartment. The Water Authority will be unable to supply sufficient head on the mains supply to serve the upper levels of the site, provision has, therefore, been made for storage tanks situated on roofs or on the hillside above roof level. Water for flushing will probably not be available in the quantity required, at least during the winter months (the dry season); a certain amount will be collected
