40 to 50 men were dead on the bench-ten men killed found in the captured prahus, and the like number in the prabus which escaped, besides those. which may have died in the jungle, we may reckon the killed at 80 to 100 men and the wounded at double that number. The loss on the British side was one man killed, and seven won wounded-t mortally and most severely. Ten brass guns vary. ing in size from 9 pounders to Leiss and five Iron guns, (three to six pounders) were captured.
Five prahus were taken, and the escape of the real is to be attributed to the small number of our boats, as at one time 8 prahus were lying na the beach abandoned by their crews, and had our boals been sufficient to secure them, the other three would have been overtaken by the Nemesis.
At the close of the engagement the sandy beach was covered by captives dying from their captors and by pirates abandoned in a hostile country, who to the last sought some means of revenge. The night closing prevented any measures being taken in favour of liberated captives, and when the morning broke they were no longer to be seen, having taken to the jungle from fear of the Bor- neons sent by the Sultan to our assistance. It is to be hoped, however, that the niensures now pur. suing to save these poor people will he attended with success, and that many of them may be restor- ed to their native country.
Among the rescued captives who took refuge in our boats, are several Chinese and Malays recently captared at Banka and Sinkep-a womau from Siantan, and a young man from Mengkabong to the Northward of Labuan-and these all agree in representing the extensive depredations committed by the Pirates The Pirates are stated to have visited during this season-the southen coast of Borneo, the Straits of Banka-Sinkap-the Auam bas-the Natunas-had the N.W. Coast of Borneo, and were slowly on their return to their own country when fartame delivered then into our hands. That the eavere lesson they have received may check their piratical habits we sincerely hope, bot we trust that such measures may be taken by Government as effectually to eradicate this pirati cal taint, from the Malay character. Piracy has heretofore heen fostered by imponity; it is to be red by severe example, and when hundreds of innocent people are yearly led away into slavery in the vicinity of European settlements, when the pajive cominetce slong the coast of the Archipe- lago is entirely destroyed- we trust that such active measures may shortly be resorted to, to remove this curae from these shores, and the disgrace from the British naine of passively witness or inffectually acting for the prevention of piracy and the slave

The Nemesis was conling, and would proceed to Sarawak with Mr. Brooke, and from thence to Singapore, and will probably arrive here on Friday or Saturday next The treaty with the Sultan had been concluded.
From the Calcutta Star, day 25.). A Government notification in the China Mail of the 1st April contains the award of the Foreign Office in the case of Mr Compton, who, it will be recollected, was heavily fined by Sir John Davis on account of a disturbance at Canton, the fine being subsequently remitted on the decision of the Chief Justice at Hongkong Loni Palmerston en- tirely approves of the fine by way of example, because it is indispensable that British subjects in China should be taught that if, on the one hand H. M. Government will exact and require from the Chinese that British subjects should be as free from molestation and insult in China ns they could be in England, yet, on the other hand H. M.'s Gavernment will exact and require from British subjects that they shall in China abstain as much from offering molestation and insult to others as they would if they were in Engine Brample is
no doubt an important thing, and to much has bean written about its advantages that more lectore upon the abstract principle is rather trite at the present day. The selection of a fitting example, pour encourager les autres, is the difficulty, and men of little judginent and strong passions are apt to gibbet themselves unconsciously when about to do the kind otice for another and for the benefit of the country.
