The Penang Gazette, in its annual retrospect bas gathered into convenient compass the few facts which have turned ap from time to fine. The Ganges, is seems, carried about 40 Chinese artists' and labourers to the Nicobars as the nucleus of the gellement

During three months, the task of elenting a site to the first establishment, of survey. ing the islands and more accurately ascertaining their capabilities was assiduously followed up. But severe sickness rendered it unsafe for the Euro- prans to continue after May: the Galathen bad lawn cuspulbol to put into Pinang from the num- ber of mail hers de' combat, and the Gongea 8008 lowed in her wake. The Irigato subsequently wended her way on that comprehensive cruise to which she had originally been destined: and the steamer remained at Pinang. Short trips were made in smaller vessels to the seulement, and i go neral supervision kept up, but to what effect is not The Gazette states that a accurately known. It is not probable therefore that much was accomplished during the past year, and in all likelihood before the present your clos's these islands will be again abandoned."

:

We are not quite so assured of this. A national hobby is overbially the last to be relinquished, and we have reason to know that the Danish go vernment do consider this as a very feasible, though an arduous, scheme. It it a personal pet of the monarch; but not of those who hold the monarch's moury big--there having been no attempt to dis- guise its difficulties or expense. The matter there- fore comintics under discusion in Europe, where the presence of Mr Hanson, the nominal governor, Is we believe employed otherwise than us the Pi- ! nung Cinzette suggests, Still thing has been deli- maikely settled-though the pression is decidedly that the colonial scheme will be upheld, and pro- wouted if not with vigour, at least with firmness. Two or three months will throw more light upon the thegotiations; and the proposed recession of Schlesvig-Holstein from Danish authority may act on the irritated nationally of the people and induce them to suck a compensation for subtraction at home by ausation abroad.

As the interest of the matter deepens with the details, and the certainly that they are authentic; and in view of the commercial, historical, and picturesque, we deem it of sufficient importance to put our readers. in possession of the full particulars as we find them in the French journal.

cessory to penetrate to a depth of three or four yards, re coining at the diamond statum. Diamonila are gathered, too, in the stony ravines at the bottom of the Paragunes itself, and of its tributary streamin.

*The prices of the diamonds of this mine varies" at Palon from 200 to 500 milreis (070 to 1,340 franes) the oeuve. Recording to their size or water. The octave is 17 carats, but the carat of Benzil is 74 pes crnt below the French carat--which makes the Brazilian carat (rom 67 to 134 francs. The ac Jual course of exchange at Bahia is 365 reis for a fraze.

The two English packets of May and June last took home about 25 millions worth (20,000) of diamonds from this mume; and since then, during the months of June and July, it hus produced nearly 1450 carats per day. It is estimated to have yielded, in the ten months during which it has been worked, marly 100,000 Portuguese carnts, (about £702,000 in valar,) three-fifths of which has taken the road of England, another fifth has gone to France and Hamburgh, and the remaining fifth waits for pur- chasers at Rio Janeiro and Bahia.

All the lapidaries in Europe could not eat oven one half the stones produced by the nines of Sin. era a reduction in value is therefore looked for, the traffic gives rise to very hazardous specu-

lations.

Brazil, whose privilege it is to furnish the dia- mowds of commerce, produced ananally, before the discovery of this mine, no more than six or seven kilogrammes-which cost more than a million of francs in the working. Hitherto the diamonds found at Sinoura are all of small sizo. It is known that thern are but few in the world which weigh more than 20 grammes. The largest is that of Agro weighing 133; that of the Rajah of Matan, at Bor: neo, weighs 78-that of the Mogul Emperor, 69- and that of France, called the Regent, 28 grammes, ceuti-grammes; but this latter is of fine form, and in all respects quite porfect. I weighed before cutting, 87 grammes, and took the work of two years.

The mine of incura presents aspect of an in- dependent colony in the heart of the mother coun- try. Hitherto, the government has taken no steps for assuring the direction of this trade, mises to be so abundant a source of wealth to the province of Bahia; and they will probably have, now, to sanction the regulations which the inhabitants have laid down for their own security in the work ing of this vast mine-that spreads already over a superficies of more than thirty leagues - Hunt's Merchants' Magazine, for December, 1846.
