OPPOSITION MOVEMENTS, Lord Stanley bas formally taken up the position that pblic opinion had already assigned to him as peculiarly his own. His Lordship has addressed a circul to the Protectionist members of the House of Peers, informing them that Parliament is to meet for the despatch of business on the 19th of January suggesting that matters of importance will, in all probability, be immediately brought under their con- siduration; and expressing a hope that it may consist with their Lordships convenience to give their at- undance at the commencement of the session. If it were what i form of construction and manner of issue world seem to imply, we could understand it as art intimation that Sir Robert Peel intended to take the hold ne lender of her Majesty's opposition. Gen. leman and this complicates the question. In the fact of the attempted deception there is no great mat ter for astonishment; it does surprise us, however.. that the concoctors of the circular should have at

The Gepray having once before visited the harbour of Hokianga it was thought no mistake could be made. The Osprey, therefore, with a strong Breeze on the starboard quarter, stood in under topgallant suits, singlerected topsails, foresails, fore and aft mainsail and jab, going between six and seven knots. At 3.15 being then upwards of two miles from the shore, the watery although the soundings previously had agreed exactly with those of Ho kianga, suddenly shoulad from ten to five falbomis, and immediately after the brig struck ground; her heel striking, she swung round, and brought the wind on the port side. The sails were immediately braced round on the port tack; but, unfortunately, the boon sheet giving way, the brig fell off and grounded fore and aft: the rollers were then setting in heavily, and the rudder was soon disubled, 10
The ship being now in a heavy surf, the Com- mander ordered the hatchway to be secured, to prevent the vessel filling. The shot, gun, and heavy articles, were pitched overboard. The brig continuing to be thrown by each successive roller nearer to the beach, the boats were got over, but were of no use on account of the high surf, and the masta were then cut away.
