very promising,as promising, and probably ns fallacious, as the prospects of our own Protectionist some half dozen years since. The day has some wher sound principles have at length heen hu- presed upon the groas central portion of the Union. We had done excellently in the East" says Mc Webstor,--"excellently in the South and the South- *East, and excellently in the steady West. But, nevertheless, while New York, Pennsylvania, and «Ohio were against us, our difficulty was great. We required then to come forward in the great "work of maintaining sound Whig principles. "Fere was our hope." We will not carry our readers through all the States, and the results which establish the gratifying fact of a great Whig resi. piscence. It is enough to say that the United States are waking to a sense of their soundest interest and most undoubted virtue. They are 14
voting the Whig ticket, and returning anti-Polkers, who, if the world shall last long enough, and there are not some very unforeseen changes in the tedious inter-9, VAI, will at least save us from a second edition of that President. Such is the hopeful state of Mr Webster's anticipations. We will venture to inter- rupt the glowing vision, and just ask our readers, have they not heard all this before? Is it a recol lection of a previous etute, or is it old Jenkinson himself who is speaking? Our suspicions thicken;: the scent grows strong. Eureka ? The Conservative model had his good measures apd his bad ones Wenlways bought, and, what is more, we always said, that they were of rather miscellaneous and patched up character, like an as- sortment of articles in a public auction room Some were genuine enough; some were evidently get up for sale Mr Webster shows himself equally an fau at the trade of political huckster. He sets off his maintenance of no exorbitant, impolitic, and unfair tariff, on the ono hand, with virtimus horror of the Teran annexation and the Mexican war, on the other. Nothing can be sounder or more instructive than a remarks on the latter point. We cannol however suppress our disgust at the company which they are introduced fo ud The villige hucketer opens a beer shop that he may allure custo mers for his bread and cheese, and, in order to get rid of last year's printed goods, pots in his shop window some remarkably cheap stockings. Mr Webster is an adept at the craft, His view of Texas and Mexico is a very good article: his come

It is unnecessary for us to any that we hope and trust the calculation 18 a bad one. We are strong in the belief that Brother Jonathan did it leave his common sense behind him in the land of his fathers,
A very litle will awake him to that true indepen- dence of spirit which declines to take measures on trust, and at any rate will not swallow n whole bud-
get without any afting. Let him profit by inglish experience Let him take neither Webster nor Polk blodly, but exercise his own judgment and chouse his own principles, on their own merits. Perhaps he would like to hear how such an address as Mr Webster's reads on this side of the Atlantic, We have already hinted at this general effect, but will be more specific. It reads like a certain states man dead and dug up again. We are told some where of a dog returning to his vomit. Mr Webster's style of politics, factious and factitious, has long been Vomited from the stomach of this country. It ex cites the most disagreeable sensations. When we see it all in our own language, spoken and applaud ed by our own kith and kin, as the Bostonians otill are, it is impossible not to be reminded of the dog M question.
