of the disorder with which he HAN I to medical treatment, and, during months, though the deceased had not U tend the Ordnance Office, he nevertheless discharget the duties of Master General very efficiently, the residence in Belgrave Square, up to the retirement vi Sir R. Peel. About two or three months sind Bir George Murray had so far recovered as to be rule to take carriage exercise, but another attack brought on a degree of bodily infirmity which e entirely con- fired him to his room, He continued in a precazí. ous condition

up to a late hour bo Mohdy night, when he became suddenly worse. The Right Bon Baronet's ordinary medical attendants were inme- diately sent for, bat being severally absent frum home, a messenger was despatched to St. George's Hospital to request the immediate attendance of any gentleman who might be disengaged. The house- surgeon promptly attended, and upon his arrival ha found the Gallant General in a hopeless condition, totally unconscious, and in this state he continued up to the period of his demise. Drs Maudsley, Ner vison, and Keate, who attended the deceased through out his protracted illness, were present at an early hour on Tuesday, but their aid was of no avail. Mrs Boyce, his daughter, and Caplain Boyce, were with the Gallant General up to the last moment.

FLS

The mine of Sir George Murray is familiar to all from his long and gallant service in the ficht, a weli as from his political connexion with several Cabinets. He was born in 1772, at the family seat in Perthshire, being the second son of Sir William Murray, Bart, by the youngest daughter of the third Earl of Cromartia. He married, in 1820, the re- list of Lieutonsut General Sir J. Erskine, Bart., daughter of the first Earl of Uxbridge, and sister to the present Marquis of Anglesen. This lady, by whom he had issue one daughter, above referred to, died in 1842.

Sir George Murray entered the army in 1782, bis firef commission being dated March 12th in that year, and his others in the following order-Cap- tuit, June 16th, 1794Captain and Lieutenant-Co- Majur funeral, June 1st, 1812; Lieut-General, May lonel, August Sib, ist Colonel, March 9th, 18097,

27, 1925; General, Nov, 23, 1841; Colonel of the 42nd Highlanders, 1823; Colonel of the 1st Royals (now, of course, vacant), Dec 29th, 1943.Dis other military oppointments were-Governor of Sundhurst College, from 1818 to 1824; Tout Gen- eral of the Ordnance, from 1824 to 1825; CommaE+ der of the Forces in Ireland, from 1825 to 1928; Aloater-General of the Ordnance, 1884-5 re-ap- pointed to the office in 1811 Governor of Fort Goorge in Inverness, from 1929 to his death in 1846.

At the period of Sir George Murray's entrance into the army the French revolution had commen ced, but it was not until a few years later, when France had guillotined her King, and declared war with all the monarchs and aristocracies of the world, that England entered into the war of which the long

duration and stupendous results were so lule fore Seen by either of the Powers engaged. In one of Murary movements of that war was Sir George Murray actively and prominently engaged. We may first mention the campaign in Holland, in 1793-94, where he served in the 3d Guards, and was present at the affair of St Amand, the battle of Far mars, siege of Valenciennes, attack of Lincelles, in-

the retreat through Holland and Germany vestment of Dunkirk, attack of Lannoy, and also at -In 1795 he was appointed Aide-de-camp to Ma jor-General Alexander Campbell, on the staff of Lord Muirn 8

irn's army. In this year he also ended in the expedition intended for Quiberon, and in the expedition for the West Indies under the celebrated Sir Ralph Abercrombie.

Eition

In 1799 he accompanied the disastron to Holland, being employed on the staff of the Quar ter-Master-General, and was wounded in action Deanr the Helder.
