Jonathan is still busy with debates, and if har- angues could make him master of the Oregon, or cunquer England I he would have had the supre- macy of both several weeks ago. But we must give him cedit also for a real activity which it would be well for our own country to imitate-with- out adopting its principle. It has begun to settle bie ramblers. rifle in hand, in the Oregon; and it has ensured their emigration en masse by the most extraordinary dountives of territory within the an- nals of public largess.
The clauses of the Oregon Occupation Bill (sig nifiennt name) contain the following provisions:-- By the firel, the jurisdiction of the Suprame Court of lows is extended over all the country lying west of the Rocky Mountains, and uvor the Intermediate country lying west of the Missouri, and between the 40th and 43d parallels of latitude." This however, does not touch upon the disputed territory. We now come to the donative, which we may well characterize as unexampled and ex- traordinary-
Be it enacted, that provision shall bereafter be made by law to secure and grant to every white years, three bundred and twenty acres of land! and person, male or female, over the age of eighteen to every white person, male or female, under the age of eighteen years, one hundred and sixty acres of land who shall have resided in the said territory tive consecutive years, to commence in three years from the passing of this ect."
It is true that here the Yankee Government ma- nages to make the most of its grant. The emigrants are to be fixed on the soil nominally five years, but actually eight before he or she can make the claim. Whether they are first to perform the part of squart- ters, or to be purchasers, as a preliminary to their

But the purpose is palpably to urge towards the Oregon the whole loose population of the Eastern states, or perhaps of Europe, to feed them with the prospect of states, and, in the meantime, to make use of them as the population of Oregon,"
In addition, the President is to be authorized to great blockhouses, stockades, and military posts," nominally for the protection of the emigrants, tra dere, &c. against the Indians; and also that a post route or mail shall be established from Fort Lea venworth th the mouth of the Columbia.
Except this brief allusion to the attacks of the Indians, we hear nothing of that unfortunate people. The United States have isased their fiat, and the soil is to be paritioned. Still we must give them credit for their activity. They lose no time; they make light of obstacles. The mouth of the Colum bia is 3,000 miles from Washington!
Yes they plant their colony, establish their posts, and des patch their mail. Are we to remain resting on our arms?
It is to be observed that, if those poste and privi leges and possessions are once established, the

Thus, the peace possession policy, which Jonathan in the pride of his craft pronounced to be the surest method of mastering the whole country, within about twenty ears, would be in full operation at once, and the British Cabinet would have only to beg pardon for giving the Yankee Cabinet so much trouble!-Britannia, May 16.
