in the bulkshead, which enabled them to see into the hold. Two men were observed opening the boxes, and could be identified. The men might have been shot from the Cabin, but it Was not thought prudent to do so, as the Europeans would in all probability have been sacrificed by the comrades of the de- ceased. The Manilaman, left on deck by the Captain, has disappeared, and it is thought that he was thrown overboard, lest he should give the alarm when he saw the strange vessel op- proaching too close.

From the depositions of the Master, Mate, and one Manila seaman, taking before Mr. Hil- lier to-day (Tuesday) it is not clear that the Chinese crew were in collusion with the pirates. It appears that when the vessel was boarded, the crew took refuge in the forecastle, and that a weight was placed on the hatch to prevent their coming on deck. This may have been done. are known, and probably on application being to prevent detection and punishment, as the men made to the Magistrates of the village to which they belong, and where it is thought they now are, they will be handed over to the Authori tios of Hongkong. The Mate went on deck after the vessel was boarded, and had a scuffle with the robbers in which he was wounded: he went below to arm himself, and as already mentioned, though he and the Captain had each a loaded musket, they could not get a shot at the plunderers who, until they got on the batch, kept them at bay with long pikes, It also appears, that theChinamen belonging to the Emma, did not leave with the pirates, but after them, in a small boat; the surviving Manila- man, who had also being confined in the fore- castle, then relieved the Master and Mate from their confinement in the Cabin
