The Reverend Gentle. man's friends attempted to vindicate him through our columns, which were of course open to them, (though even they admitted the flogging,) and they drew forth a rejoinder, which we regret contained some allusions to national questions, which had better have been avoided, as the acts of a humble individual, cannot in the most remote degree reflect discredit upon the land of his birth.

Though of a rather old date, we transfer to our columus paragraph from the Bombay Courier, making some comparisons between H. M. Brig Pilot and the clipper "Lanrick." The new arrangements by which the mails from Europe arrive by steam, has in some degree drawn attention from the unrivalled sailing vessels between China and India, to whose matchless speed the foreign public of this part of the Globe, and the Government of Hongkong, were so long indebted for an early receipt of letters and despatches. That they no longer put us in possession of intelligence from Europe, and seldom even from India, is only another proof of the power of steam, and the community thankful for past favors, will always feel an interest in their old favorites, who have so often, by a speedy communication, Our correspondent's second letter appeared shortened the distance between them and their on the 19th of November and with it the matter friends. The ship Sir Robert Sale has been chartered to carry to England invalids belonging to the naval and military forces in China. On a Sunday evening the Gentlenen refor- red to, and their wives, were pleased to hear from a neighbouring house the voice of family worship; but the sacret melody had scarcely ceased, when, from the same house, there were heard the most dreadful screams. The Gentle men rushed into the house, and on the landing place at the top of the stairs they saw a colour ed woman lying, the "highly useful Clergymen," who had just rose from worship, beating her sa vagely with a flick or rattan. They rebuked him for his unmanly conduct, but used no violence to hun, leaving his house immediately that they had performed a duty, which we apprehensi no man would shrink from, even at the risk of be. ing branded as Coward and Blanderer by anonymous correspondents, and a paper of the reputation of the Chus Mail.

The Agents in this detestible business aro principally Bugis, by whom the unfortunate beings are carried from Bally to the ports where they can dispose of them to the greatest advantage. It would appent from what we formerly noticed re. garding the slaves brought from Pahang by the Steamer Diana, that the greatest slave holders are the Arabs. A few weeks ago information was re ceived by the authorities here that one or more Bugis Slavers were at Pahang, upon which the H. C.
