patronizing a countryman in Egypt who lived down a dirty lane and up two pair of stairs, when he could get sour claret and salad oil, with French waiters, in the Hotel de F'Orient Grand Square, Cairo We reached Cairo on the 12th, and left it on the morning of the 16th; and here again we found to our agreeable surprise how marvellous were the lubrications wherewith our ears had been crammed about the hardships to be endured on the Nile. The little steamer of that name is as neat and handy a river craft as need be desired-not over large certainly, but sufficiently so for the accommo dation of fifty passengers; we were twenty-five, and had room enough and to spare. The viands and wines once more were excellent, and all the servants of Transit Company most civil. I really do not think that bere we had any complaints. On deck there was a very heavy dew. One way or other, how ever, most of us contrived to spend the night much more comfortably than we could have done outside night-coach at home or inside "the diligence," and complaints were few, I beard of neither cold nor rheumatism, and we had an excellent breakfast and great civility. We reached Alexandria at half- past ten-in eisteen hours from Cairo, land and witer, all stoppages included. BOMBAY

ALEXANDRIA, 18th June, 1845.—Well, here we Are all safe and sound: the only passengers who have had to wait at Alexandria for the arrival of the mail for many a day past. We landed at Sucz about noon on the 11th; one portion of the party started at three, another at half-past seven, and each pccupied about seventeen hours in reaching Cairo, including a stay of one or two hours at the Grst and jast, and betwixt two and three at the centre station above five hours in all. The arrangements the Transit Company appear to me most extraor dinary the attention and the fare were everywhere urst rate, and the drivers kept up the speed through put-seven and a half miles an hour-with the precision of an English stage coach. Complaints, notwithstanding this, were abundant everywhere: pne grievance was that we were not allowed to rest long enough; another, that we were too long at the station houses! Some of the horses at one point became troublesome; and it was considered the most monstrous thing on earth that they should not have been as quiet as ladies' poodles, and the desert as smooth and verdant as a bowling green. One lady complained that there was no fresh fruit -neither grapes nor peaches-she had been told that both were plentiful in Egypt; another that they had steel forks, and German silver spoons; in fact 1

tibere was no end to our miseries-Vans ap parently being imagined to be things somewhat like The Hope Hall Hotel on wheels. Well, we had one grievance certainly, but for this we had our- selves to thank. The two English Hotels had been recommended to us, but the site of the French one pas so vasily preferable, and then it was foreign-list of sales of Metals. continental — French in short—everything to an Englishman from home. To the Hotel de l'Orient we went accordingly, having the double misery of wretched fore to endure along with the vexation of hearing the character of the other two extolled in every quarter. We had no excuse whatever to offer for ourselves, and therefore magnanimously admitted that we had been rightly served for our
