It is impossible, even in the worst, that hostili. ties with England should grow out of the Oregon dispute, within less that a year. The existing treaty requires a notice from either party, of twelve months to the other, before it can be terminated. Before that convention is thus ended, we trust our
position will be stronger and more imposing than it is at present. An addition to our force would, of itself, decidedly increase the probability that pence will be preserved; and in the even of its in- fraction, would be a matter of inevitable necessity. Washington's advice, "in Pezce to prepare for war," is one of the most prudent of the many wise maxims, which the Father of his country bequeathed to his proterity.

With England we have controversies which while they are certain to result in war if we con- tinue the bullying tone recently adopted, may be readly arranged by arbitration. The language of the British Government, together, with the manner in which it was received by the popular branch of Parliament and echoed by the press without dis- tinction of party, leaves no room to doubt that she will maintain her claim to Oregon by force of arms if necessary; while in this country it cannot be denied, that a large portion of the people are equal- ly convinced of the justice of our claim and dispos ed to assert it in the most prompt and explicit maa- We believe that a decided majority of the people of the United States look upou Oregon as vent its being forcibly seized by Great Britain.

A controversy in which such strong and deep convictions are opposed so each other, cannot be of easy settlement without the intervention of a third party. It is evident that mutual concession is the only condition on which peace can be preserved. Neither can yield all that is demanded by the other. For our own part we would yield much rather than resort to war. Peace is essential to our prosperity. and would besides do more than war to acquire pos. session of the territory in dispute. The tide of emigration is rapidly sending in that direction, and under the fostering care which our Government by existing treaty, is allowed to extend to it within ten years, would peaceably make Oregon American ground. It would establish upon it a population which no force England could send thither, could drive away, and would secure our claim, in its ful-. lest extent, without the loss of blood or treasure, or honor, which is dearer than either.
