VESSELS IN VICtonia Harbour, H. M. S. Castor, Captain Graham,
A contemporary notices the arrival of a Junk from Too-chow-foo with an cargo of teas, we also hear of several Junks, from Chin-Chew, being now in the harbour in quest of rice, and another Junk, we observe from the shipping list, has arrived from Singapore. We hope the day is not far distant when the arrival of three or four Junks will not be a matter of im- portance, and congratulation among those who feel an interest in the welfare of the colony. Among the many foolish actions of this govern- ment, they deserve credit for a degree of com- man sense, in so far, as they put no restrictions upon native vessels visiting the port. This may be the only laurel they will bear with them from China, and they should cherish the. exotic, as it will be a thing upon which the eye can rest with pleasure in reviewing the dreary file of stupid and ridiculious ordinances which have emenated from their collective wisdom. Local politics have got to be disagreeable sub- jects of discussion, we turn from them with pleasure to notice the improved salubrity of M. Tr. S. Alligator, King, the island. It is more probable, (in Boxer, (Ain) Woodbery, our opinion), that the improvementsin the shape Carib, Heaton, of drains and sewers, with the better descrip- tion of tenements now available to most of the inhabitants, is the true cause of the decrease of fever Arguing upon this hypothesis, we would say, that another summer will show a further in provement in the climate, as the drains, sewers, roads &c. are yet very far from being in that condition which in a tropical country, the wel fare of the inhabitants demands.

This well include the greater portion of Scott and Byron's produc- tion, and all the standard books before their day. It appears altogether a gratuitous piece of legislation, the attempting to enforce this act. we apprehend that they are in Hongkong; and American editions of Boz, Bulwer or Marayatt's latest works may con- unue to be sold for a dollar, while ten dol. lars niay be asked for the English copy, The fact is, that people don't want good editions in China. Two years of this climate, will effectually spoil any book for the shelves of a Gentleman's library in England. Not one man in fifty who leaves China will take his library with him; the books most probably will go to the hammer, or be given away, Mildewed and Cockroach eaten they may do here, though scarcely fit for the library, or the Chiffoniers at home.

To those, who find one of their chief enjoy. ments in the perusal of new works of light litern ture, (novels, romances plays and so forth) this measure if enforced-will be a positive cruelty. We would seriously suggest to Mr.Penn Townsend, the policy of holding an occasional book auction on the Cowloon shore. In this unsociable place, a new novel is an agreeable companion, and many will grieve if they are to be deprived of it. We are not aware that our American friends bave piratically published.
