Do. 28 millions of inhabitants, and is one third larger than Obio. A contemporary in noticing this fact, thinks February 8 it arises from the gigantic scale, by which every thing in the West is measured. Their rivers, forests, prairies. cataracte and caverns are of the sublimest order; their lakes are inlund seas; they measure pork by the cord and mass-meetings the acre. Iowa is a Giantess in swaddling clothes, she uses the cradle in which Hercules was rocked. The Historical Society of this city is still laboring to achieve a name for these United States of Ame rico. It is melancholy to think that twenty mil lions of Freemen should posses a country without a name. The last new name proposed was Al legania. How would the Pittsburgh people like it -The speech of Mr. Van Buren Attorney, Ge neral of the State, on the trial of Big Thunder, is represented to have been cool, calm, dignified and, argumentive, Wiley and Putnam bave published in a very handsome octavo, the Lectures and illus trations of Professor Flauvel Gouraud on the Art of Memory,-The Temple of the Muses or the Floating Theatre, opened on Wednesday evening. at the foot of Springst, was attended by a numerous and respectable audience: no persons of improper character are admitted, and everything appears to be conducted in a moral, and quiet manner.-The Boston Traveller is now issued daily, as an evening paper.-The sloop of war Albany now on the stocks at the Navy Yard, is represented to be of a beautiful model, with every accommodation for, men and officers, and likely to be one of the fastest sailers in the Navy. She was built under the su- perintendence of Mr. Grice. Noval Constructor, one of the oldest end most experienced in the Navy, If required, the Albany could be got ready for January launching in ten days. The Columbus line of bat tle ship is now ready for her officers and crew, and is destined for the East Indies; Commodore Biddle hoists his broad penunt on board of the Columbus. The North Carolina 74, guard ship, will soon rez sume her former station off the Battery.

The Courier des Etat Unis says that it is Signor Almonte's firm conviction that a rap- ture between Mexico and the United State is in- evitable. Our firm conviction is to tha contrary. --We have heretofore noticed a company formed nt Baltimore, with diving bells and apparatus, bound to the Spanish main to fish up two millions of dollars, sunk some fifty years ago in a Spanish man-of-war, called the San Pedro. They have got up an anchor, a cannon, and several dollars which | May look very much as if they had struck the mine.. The San Pedro was blown up from accident in her maganine.
