ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Friend of China.
Hongkong, July 14th, 1845. SIR-Though I am well aware you are not versed in the law, still, I am certain you possess a certain amount of common sense and some judgment which would enable you to give an opinion upon any sub- ject that directly appealed to your reason, will you therefore kindly bring this faculty into operation and give me your opinion as to the course you would adopt under circumstances similar to those, I shall now Jay before you.
THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE.
It will however lead to the settlement of a question which has too long been left in abe- yance the respective claims of the United States, and of Great Britain, to the Oregon Territory. The annexation of Texas does not appear to meet the approbation of the Texians themselves, who certainly ought to have a voice in the matter, and the unprincipled bill which was hurried through the legislature by the ex President, will possibly be worth less than the paper upon which it is engrossed.

NOTE. We are at a loss to perceive what can induce Amicus to address us on this subject. A question between individuals referring to property is clearly one for legal decision, and quite unfit for the public press.
If Amicus really wants our advice, we would say to him, consult an Attorney, and if you are in the right the laws of your county will do you justice. If you are in the wrong do not suppose that an ex parte statement, though published in a newspaper, will have any influence over the minds
