Diplomatic Department. GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.
His Excellency Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary, &c., desires to draw the attention of British Mer. Canto, and the Masters of British Merchant Ships Ching, to the appended Extract of an Official Note from the Chinese High Officers to his Predeces- Sor, published in 1943, with reference to the hiring of Pilots. An attempt having been lately made by the local government of Canton, without His Excellency's consent, to revert to the old and vexatious system of Employing Macao Pilots in an official character, apart from the mere duty of navigating the ships into port, it is recommended that no person under the designa. tion of Pilot, who has not been hired by the Master or Consignee of the Vessel, be under any pretence recog pized.
