SIR HENRY POTTINGER. Upwards of forty years have passed since young- Henry Pottinger, a boy of thirteen years of age, left his native country, to seek his fortune in the East. The younger son, only, of an old and honourable. family in the north of Ireland, he started in life without those aids of wealth and rank which help- ed the early career of some of his most distinguish- ed contemporaries. But he bore with him, even at that immature age, an energy of character which attracted the notice of those who surrounded him, and led to his being early preferred for difficult duties.
During forty years Asin has been the scene of his. services, and of triumphs more or less brilliant almost and important. Yet although his
from the earliest period of his service, hasured for him the admiration and esteem of his conrades and contemporaries in the East, and the good opini-. on of Governments at home, it is only since his pro- ceedings in China have brought his reputation to a climax that his countrymen generally have learnt the real value of his past life, When he was nomi nated to be our Plenipotentiary there, the public ge nerally had only heard of him as one among the eminent men who had contributed to raise the mili Lary
character of the Indian army, and to exemplify the importance of our relations in the East, as al- fording a school for the formation of negotiators and
statesmen. The character which within our own time—to var nothing of his predecessors-Sic Ar thur Wellesley stamped upon the service in the East has been ably sustained and perpetuated by distin guished men since, and by none more so than by Sir Y the undersigned black and white Hats of su Henry Pattinger. conducted himself in a way to ründer his country deservedly proud of the possession ofsuch an officer. Some parts of his early life in the Eam were at- mesta romance. For years it has been the custorge of the Anglo-Indias Government to employ enter- prising young officers an semi-political agents in the different Oriental states. Unprotected by the sacred character of ambassadors, yet raised far above the chicus character of apies, they have to trust to the weight of the English name, and their own bra- very, self-possession, and address, for their pratec- tion against the treachery and cruelty of the people
