doing so, at least before another edict issues from government, making this an offence, which at present it is not.

"RIOT.

On Tuesday morning about 8 o'clock a large concourse of Chinese assembled at the West end of Victoria. About fifty of them ranged themselves in file, fully armed with boat hooks, axes, and other weapons. The shops and houses in the neighbour hood were shut, and the riot begair to assume rather a serious appearance. Notice being sent to the General Police Office, Mr. Halzer, accompani ed by two of the new Superintendens, arrived with a posse of constables; but the Chinese no sooner aw them coming, them they began to make off and

Thirteen of the principal | throw away their arms rioters were captured, and a quantity of weapons.

ken.

It appears that the China Polier, who are sla- tioned at this part of the Settlement, are not upon friendly terms with their brethren, and the feud has grown to such a height that the present muster of force was resolved upon.

Thirteen of the rioters were brought before the Chief Magistrate, who passed sentence upon them offrom 6 to 2 months imprisonment, and some have been flogged.

SERIOUS AFFRAY.

On Wednesday last, a quarrel took place at Ma- cao, between some Chinese and Manila-men, and after a very few words, one of the Chinese seized a large knife and stabbed a Vanila man, who died in a few hours after receiving the wound, The Ching-in was immediately secured and handed over to the Portuguese authorities.
