terly the trade has declined in consequence of the favorable price at which the produce of Manila, Siam and Java can be laid down in Bombay. For the past year the gross amount of sugar shipped to India and Great Britain is in value.
Sugar, Sugar Candy,
$379,854 ,,200,536
8640,390; of this the greater share has been during the last six months, the first half of the year only shaowing shipments of Sugar and Sugar Candy in value $110,320.
We have thus briefly reviewed the export trade of Canton, which with the exception of Shanghai, may still be said to be the export trade of China, though we believe the present year will give different results. The trade of Shanghai has not been officially published, but from private information we may rate it at, Im ports (including 484,000 pcs. of cotton goods) £501,000 Sterling; Exports £488,000 Sterling. In the year 1844 there entered the port of Shanghai 38 British and five foreign ves sels the tonnage being 10,584. The duties paid on imports by British merchants was 76,460 taels; on exports 52,135 taels; the port charges on ships were 3,910 faels, The exports in foreign bottoms during the year was only $54,000, chifly raw silk on British account,
