The difficulty which the Missionary Societies have had to struggle against the land-sharking propensities of their ministers and catechists in the Colonies, and the occasional demission of the spiritual character by missionaries rather than part with the lands they had purchased from the natives at a nominal price, prove our position to a certain extent. But the readiness with which missionary agents exchange their pastoral for diplomatic functions affords a still mure striking Illustration of it. At this moment we have no fewer than three Government officials abroad to whom the missionary character has been a step pingstone to political employment. The missione cable nary Gutzlaff has been converted into a Govern ment interpreter, and quase Superintendent of Po- lice, at Hongkong; the missionary Pritchard has been converted into a British consul at Cahelte;. constituted and the missionary Claske has been Protector of the Aborigines, Minister of State for The Native Department, in New Zealand. The elevation of a foreign adventurer and a couple of mechanics to official ran's, and high salaries is enough to attract a whole host of mercenaries into the employment of the Missions, They will look forward to the same opportunities of cutting out work for themselves, and the same zealous patro- page from the managers at home, and regard the appointment of catechist as a better introduction to a snug place under Government than eyen a clerkship in a Government office.

Intending to enter it: Sucer so as to pass two cables to the East of Double Island (which bears NW. by N. of a mile from Sugar loaf) having passed it the course is West for the town of Shantan which is upon the North bank of the Ri. ver and 4 miles from Double Island: half a mile to the SE. of the town, there is a depth of 8 fins and at low water, the water is fresh.

The land in its step that awakened the jealousy of the Chinese neighbourhood is so low that when first made, it Government, and led eventually to the spium war;

appears like an Island. Clarke has been mainly instrumental in producing that state of affairs in New Zealand which occasio ned the Wairao massacre; and it will not be the fault of the orators of the London Missionary So- riety if Pritchard do not become the cause of war between France and Great Pritain.

For the political influence and misdirected a tivity of the Missionary bodies Government is greatly to blame. The meddling of missionaries abroad in matters leyond their sphere has been encouraged to supply the deficiencies of Govern- ment. - The power of afiliated bodies spread through every province of the empire, continually appealing to the prepossessions of an estimable portion of the community by the press or pubic meetings, collecting and dispensing annually reve Dues to the amount of hundreds of thousands, bas made the Legislature and die Executive quail befo- re it. Missionary zeal has been affected as a pass. portints Parliament; and the Government offices Inyo been crammed with the offspring of the agents of Missionary Societies. Government-all our Ministers for many years boekt have been little better than tools to the reculauty of Missions.

The influence of the traders on the Missionary sentiment is not confined to the departments already Specified, or rather, they are naturally caguee with all the traders, whatever their designation, on the religious sentiment of the country. These are art and parcel of that fraternity which has been allowed almost to ruin our Tropical Colonies by their rash and blundering plan el negro emancipation, and which only last year caused the rejection of the education clauses in the Factory Bill. They are, in fact on intrigning worth minded hierarchy, as higoted and domineering in their sectarian The Romish hierarchy in its paliest days,
